On Tuesday, 25 November 2025, a large-scale fire erupted in the Korail slum, one of Dhaka’s most densely populated informal settlements at approximately 17:20 local time. The blaze spread rapidly through closely built tin, bamboo, and wooden structures, fuelled further by overhead electrical lines and household gas cylinders. Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate immediately with very few belongings.
According to preliminary estimates from the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), around 1,500 shanties have been destroyed, leaving many families displaced. While no fatalities or major injuries have been officially reported, many people—particularly women, children, older persons, and persons with disabilities—experienced shock, minor injuries, and significant distress. Displaced households are now sheltering in nearby open spaces such as Ershad Field and the T&T Colony school grounds.
