In the industrial heart of Narayanganj City Corporation, residents of Sumilpara community experience high temperatures often exceeding 34°C due to limited greenery. To strengthen resilience, the Disaster and Climate Risk Management Department of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, with support from British Red Cross, implementing the Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) Project, promoting some approaches of nature-based solutions.
One such solution identified during a Nature-Based Solutions assessment was homestead gardening in urban spaces. This approach offers increased greenery to mitigate heat, improvement of household nutrition, and creating opportunities for additional income. Under this project 400 community members received seeds, fertilizer, pots, gardening tools and hands-on training from professional agricultural officers to transform the smallest spaces into productive gardens.
