From Awareness to Action: How Preparedness Saved a

In the densely populated Sumilpara community of Narayanganj City Corporation, houses are built in proximity where electrical connections are often shared and overburdened. During the hot and dry season, this closeness, combined with electrical connections, creates a constant risk of fire. Some fire incidents have occurred in the past, often spreading quickly due to limited preparedness and lack of proper equipment.

Recognizing the increasing vulnerability of the community, the Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) project, of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society stepped forward with timely initiatives to strengthen community resilience and protect families from the growing risk of fire hazards. Under this project, community members of Sumilpara community received fire blankets alongside practical fire safety orientation, awareness sessions, and hands on fire drill simulations. With support from the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense, residents engaged in live demonstrations to build their confidence in responding to emergencies. Video documentaries were also shown in crowded places to ensure that knowledge retention remained strong over time.
