Building a Cleaner, Greener Palongkhali – A Sustainable Waste

Since 2022, the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), with support from the Swiss Red Cross,

has been leading a transformative initiative in Palongkhali Union Parishad, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar under the Population Movement Operation (PMO).

This initiative focused on establishing a Solid Waste Management (SWM) system and Material Recovery Facility (MRF)—bringing about a significant change in local waste management practices and promoting a culture of cleanliness, recycling, and sustainability.

Transforming Waste into Resources

The project covered 08 local marketplaces, nearby communities, and 30 educational institutions, where waste was systematically collected, processed, and reused. The organic waste was converted into compost, which was later sold in the market—demonstrating how waste can be turned into a usable resource. This not only helped reduce environmental pollution but also created an avenue for income generation.

Impacts of the Solid Waste Management Project

Throughout the project period, various interventions led to several notable impacts in Palongkhali, including the installation of collection points, composting and recovery facilities, and the development of waste collection systems and sanitary landfills. The project also promoted hygiene and the 3R approach (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), contributing to reduced health risks, environmental protection, and governance capacity.

A Milestone Moment: Handover Ceremony

On 6 August 2025, a milestone was achieved with the official handover of all project facilities, equipment, and machinery to the Palongkhali Union Parishad. The ceremony marked the transition of ownership and responsibility from BDRCS to the local Union Parishad, ensuring the project’s long-term sustainability.
