Nature Pulse helps coastal communities in Barguna District adapt to a changing climate by working with nature. Led by the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society with the support of the British Red Cross, the project aims to restores mangroves and other coastal ecosystems, strengthens livelihoods, improves access to safe water and sanitation, and builds community readiness for climate-related hazards.
Background
Coastal communities in Barguna are exposed to climate and disaster risks. During the Enhanced Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment, communities identified two major climate challenges: ecosystem degradation and salinity intrusion. The loss of wetlands, rivers, coastal vegetation and fisheries is weakening the natural protection that coastal people rely on. At the same time, rising salinity is affecting agriculture, freshwater sources and aquatic biodiversity. Together, these pressures deepen livelihood and socio-economic vulnerabilities, particularly for households that depend directly on land, water and the coast for their income.
